barbie and the pinakothek der moderne

***
yay, the münchen design post!

so as i mentioned earlier, the second day in münich i visited a really great museum called the 'pinakothek der moderne' which had the most awesome design collection ever.

the lobby of the building was quite spectacular:

i'd like to show you some highlights from their UNBELIEVABLE design collection, starting with their current special exhibition, THE FAT BOOTY OF MADNESS (a jewelry show):

i absolutely ADORE these pieces, they are SO demented:

now THAT is some serious schmuck (yes, that really is the german word for jewelry).

so as far as the permanent collection goes...

i found this display pretty much outta control:

classy guide to said display:

the next room houses some serious vehicular eye candy:

the pinakothek's collection also includes quite an interesting display of outdated technological objects. talk about nostalgia...

and then there is the furniture.

my dream desk:

the wonderous gaetano pesche's amazing "new york sunset" sofa

a bauhaus tv:

and matching minivan:

beautiful stereo:

some 60s pill lamps and chair (the green object):

another beautiful stereo:

and last but not least, the art...

without even getting into their collection of beuys, warhol, etc. let me just mention the incredibly striking dan flavins retrospective.

honestly, if you're not familiar with flavins, i can imagine you looking at the pictures and thinking, "well, what's so special about these? they just look like neon lights..." and i would be thinking the same thing HAD I NOT seen these in person, as the actual experience being so very incredible i cannot describe it. these SERIOUSLY fuck with your perception of body, colour, space, others, etc. - they're just great.

this one in particular blew my mind - it's from a series of 24 "monuments" dedicated to constructivist vladimir tatlin...

separated by this room housing a disconcerting green barrier:

and i swear when i left this exhibit i saw everything in pink for like an hour (talk about rose-coloured glasses...)

then my mom and i explored this bizarre playland made entirely of white plastic twist-ties:

me and my lovely mütter:

and that, my dears, wraps up another installment of "bavarian barbie 2008" - i'll be back with a final münchen post and then back to berlin, baby :)
